Located in historic Fort Bend
County, just 20 miles southwest of
Houston, Sugar Land is named for the
sugar cane crops that were grown in
the area in the mid-19th century.
Originally a “company town” for
employees of the sugar mill, the
City's population jumped from 24,529
in 1990 to 63,328 in 2000 - a 158%
increase, and is ranked first in
growth among Texas’s 45 largest
cities. Today, Sugar Land boasts a
unique balance of business and
residential amenities, 20 parks and
several golf courses, a strong
financial picture and
forward-thinking plans for continued
development, in addition to the high
level of public services our
citizens have come to expect. Sugar
Land has a growing community of
corporations such as Aetna US
Healthcare, Unocal, and MCI
Communications.
Children attend Fort Bend
Independent School District, some of
the top-rated schools in the Houston
area, and residents enjoy a safe
community, as Sugar Land has one of
the lowest crime rates in the
nation. Nearly 100% of residents
rate their quality of life as
excellent.
And it's not just residents who are
impressed with the Sugar Land. In
2006, the city was named by Money
magazine as the 3rd Best Place to
Live in America, and by Business
Week as one of the Top 25 Best and
Most Affordable Suburbs in the US.
Sugar Land has also been recognized
three years in a row (2006-2008) as
a 100 Best Communities for Young
People from America's Promise - The
Alliance for Youth. And in 2007,
Sugar Land officially became the
first city in the nation to be named
a Community of Respect® by the
Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The
national distinction recognizes
Sugar Land's tradition of embracing
diversity, promoting togetherness
and refuting intolerance.
